BEYOND WAR: A LOOK INTO THE LEGACY & TIMES OF A REGGAE ICON

BOUNTY KILLER ( Born June 12-1972)
Also known as:

  • The General,
  • Warlord,
  • Five Star General,
  • Ghetto Gladiator,
  • Poor People Governor,
  • Grung Gad (Ground God),
  • Seven Star
  • Salvation Army General
" Some beef is everlasting...complete with thick scars." ~Rapper Nasir Jones A.K.A- NAS

What's beef? Visit any popular Reggae/Dancehall news portal on-line today and you are bound to come across an article that touches on the impending "war" between Bounty Killer, the founder of the Dancehall collective- Alliance and seemingly the rest of the Dancehall fraternity. One can liken Mr. Rodney Price, otherwise known as Bounty Killer to the role of music icon Jay-Z in the Hip Hop Arena; where more novice, aspiring deejays misuse the legacy of over-accomplished artist who came before them to acquire status and in some cases even infamy. If the Five Star General's future is to continue to mirror the impeccable music business legacy of Mr. Shawn Carter, then Price will be nemesis to a greater number of industry hopefuls as well as the recipient of many more unprecedented accolades, accomplishments and successes. Not many up and coming or established Dancehall artist today can boast the release of 13 full-length studio albums, a United States Music Bill Board Chart top 5 hit, an undocumented number of single releases as well as collaborations with American Super-Star Jay-Z himself, in addition to multi-platinum selling acts such as No Doubt, Producer Swizz Beatz, Wyclef Jean, Busta Rymes, The Fugees and Capone-N-Noreaga. Rather then dwell on all of the petty details of how veteran Dancehall Artist Bounty Killer accumulates passionate detractors daily such as Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Portmore Empire, Flippa Mafia, Harry Toddler, Monster Empire, Ninja Man, Merciless and countless others, Yardrock would like to celebrate the man at the center of all the contention. Who is Bounty Killer?

Even as our writers review the discography and history of one the greatest lyricist alive, Yardrock is blasting the Grung Gad's 2006 classic tune, "Sufferer" in the background. Its no wonder such a phenomenal artist is both revered and envied in the Dancehall community. His commanding voice, visual word-play, and unwavering realism is still unmatched by his counterparts almost 2 decades after his entry into the music world.

"Politicians get gi guns and give it to da sufferah
Sufferah go get di gun and shoot anotha sufferah
Who full up di prison yuh nuh see a pure sufferah
Who full up a dozen hospital a pure sufferah "

LUCKY DUBE
...RIP

Today in Johannesburg South Africa, three men were found guilty of Murder. The victim, the acclaimed, international, Reggae Artist Lucky Dube lives on through his conscious message of wisdom and non-violence. At the young age of 43, Dube's life was snuffed out from him in front of his two children in October of 2007.

According to a report made to the New York Times, the crime rate in South Africa is alarming. "In 2006, it was about eight times more than the United States’ and 20 times higher than Western Europe’s."

Rather than dwell on all of the negative elements of this horrific incident, Yardrock would like our readers to take a moment and remember Lucky Dube by celebrating his life and his music.

Career Highs:
  • In 1989 he won four OKTV Awards for his album Prisoner, won another for Captured Live the following year and yet another two for House Of Exile the year after.
  • His 1993 album, Victims sold over one million copies worldwide
  • His most recent album, Respect, earned a European release through a deal with Warner Music.

YARD ROCK: BEHIND THE SCENES TRIBUTE

YARD ROCK ACKNOWLEDGES: MRS. VIVIAN SCOTT CHEW BEHIND THE SCENES

Philanthropist, international executive, visionary, wife, mother and active church member, Vivian Scott Chew has distinguished herself as an individual of integrity, foresight and indomitable will. In an industry that ebbs and flows like the changing tides, Chew has remained constant - a constant source of inspiration to her colleagues, family and friends, a constant vigilante on the lookout for talent, and a constant reminder that hard work and dedication to duty is still the best way to climb the ladder of success.

Vivian's career in the entertainment industry began with a stint as executive assistant to Louise C. West, Esq., an entertainment attorney. While maintaining her duties for Ms. West, she was also the personal assistant of producer, artist and author Kashif. In 1985 Chew landed a job at ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) and became the first African-American woman to become a membership representative. Recognizing the need to honor songwriters and producers, she fought hard and was in the vanguard of creating the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards, currently in its 12th year, and organized several seminars and workshops for aspiring young songwriters.

In 1987, at a time when the African American female was an unknown species in the land of A&R, she carved her own path, forged her own frontiers, and built a bridge for others to follow. Joining the PolyGram family as the Director of A&R, Chew orchestrated the signing of Third World and platinum-selling, international Latin Hip Hop sensation, Safire. Excited with the challenge of nurturing new talent and watering the seeds of ambition into fruition, Chew accepted the position of Director of A&R at Epic Records in 1990. Not missing a beat, she followed the drums to the island of Jamaica and signed Shabba Ranks. It was a royal union - the "natty" king of dancehall and the "nubian" queen of A&R - that spawned one platinum and gold album and back-to-back Grammys. She had proven her point and a promotion was not only well deserved but inevitable. When reggae music was considered a "hard-to-understand" entity, it was Vivian's vision that made it popular and platinum. In 1992 she became the Vice President of A&R, and in 1993, she was named Vice President of the Urban Music Division.

She yielded to temptation and returned to Jamaica to sign Patra, laid a gift of "gold" at her feet and crowned her "dancehall queen." In 1995, the position of Head of the Urban Music Department for the newly created 550 Music/Sony label was tailored specifically for her. During her tenure, Chew personally signed George Clinton and was responsible for overseeing all of the urban acts. Two years later, she returned to Epic to head the A&R/Urban Music Division.

Today, Vivian is Founder/ Principal of TimeZone International - an international marketing and promotions firm in the U.S., with a mission to market urban culture globally. She is also co-founder of Chew Entertainment, along with her husband Ray Chew, writer/musician/arranger/producer and musical director of "It's Showtime At The Apollo" and the Apollo Theatre Foundation. She provides entertainment services in coordinating bands for live shows, concerts, special events presentation and tour schedules for performing artists and entertainers from all musical genres.

In 1993, Vivian founded the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Music Industry Dinner, which over the past five years has raised close to two million dollars for research to find the cure for juvenile diabetes. As the mother of a diabetic daughter, she, along with Jerry Ade, President of Famous Artist Agency, recognized the need for education and information about a disease that could go easily undetected in many households. YARD ROCK: HISTORY THROW BACK

Derrick Morgan (born 27 March 1940, Mocho, Clarendon Parish, Jamaica) is a musical artist popular in the 1960s and 1970s.[1] He worked with Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley, and Jimmy Cliff in the ska genre, and he also performed rocksteady and skinhead reggae.

In 1957, Morgan entered the Vere Johns Opportunity Hour, a talent show held at the Palace Theatre in Kingston. He won with rousing impressions of Little Richard, and shortly after that, was recruited to perform around the island with the popular Jamaican comedy team, Bim and Bam. In 1959, Morgan entered the recording studio for the first time. Duke Reid, the acclaimed sound system boss, was looking for talent to record for his Treasure Isle record label. Morgan cut two popular shuffle-boogie sides "Lover Boy", aka "S-Corner Rock", and "Oh My". Soon after, Morgan cut the bolero tinged boogie, "Fat Man", which also became a hit. He also found time to record for Coxsone Dodd.

In 1960, Morgan became the first artist to fill the places from one to number seven on national pop chart simultaneously, a feat that to this day has never been matched.[2] Among those hits were "Don't Call Me Daddy", "In My Heart", "Be Still" and "Meekly Wait and Murmur Not". But it would be the following year that Morgan would release the biggest hit of his career, the Leslie Kong production of "You Don't Know", later re-titled, "Housewives’ Choice" by a local DJ. The song featured a bouncing ska riddim, along with a duet sung by Morgan and Millicent "Patsy" Todd.

"Housewives’ Choice" began the legendary rivalry between Morgan and Prince Buster, who accused Morgan of stealing his ideas. Buster quickly released, "Blackhead Chiney Man", chiding Morgan with that sarcastic putdown of, "I did not know your parents were from Hong Kong", a clear swipe at Kong. Morgan returned with the classic, "Blazing Fire", in which he warns Buster to "Live and let others live, and your days will be much longer. You said it. Now it’s the Blazing Fire". Buster shot back with, "Watch It Blackhead" which Morgan countered with, "No Raise No Praise" and "Still Insist". Followers of both artists often clashed, and eventually the government had to step in with a staged photo shoot depicting the rivals as 'friends'.

In the mid 1960s, when ska evolved into the cooler, more soulful rocksteady period, Morgan continued to release top quality material, including the seminal rude boy classic, "Tougher Than Tough", "Do the Beng Beng", "Conquering Ruler", and a cover of Ben E. King’s soul hit, "Seven Letters". Produced by Bunny Lee, the latter is often cited as the first true reggae single.[3] In 1969, Morgan cut the famous skinhead anthem, "Moon Hop" (on Crab Records). However, failing eyesight then forced him from the stage, but Morgan still performs occasionally at ska revival shows across the world. Often backed by the guitarist, Lynn Taitt, Morgan remained popular in Jamaica and the UK into the early 1970s. He has lived primaily in either the UK or the U.S. since the late 1960s.

In July 2002 in Toronto, Canada, a two night 'Legends of Ska' concert was held. Reuniting were The Skatalites, Lloyd Knibbs, Rico Rodriguez, Lloyd Brevett, Lester Sterling, Johnny Moore and Lynn Taitt; along with Prince Buster, Alton Ellis, Owen Gray, Lord Creator, Justin Hinds, Derrick Harriott, Winston Samuels, Roy Wilson, Patsy Todd, Doreen Shaffer, Stranger Cole, Lord Tanamo and Derrick Morgan.[4][5] In 2007, Morgan appeared on the bill at the annual Augustibuller festival. His song "Tougher Than Tough" was featured in the video game, Scarface: The World is Yours.

"I did not take it seriously," said Gyptian "My family members have always been carrying me to Portmore to see him, but I usually disappear. One day, they dropped me off at his studio and left me and it all began there."

In 2005 he scored two hits, "Is There A Place" on the Seasons Riddim and "Serious Times". The latter was considered by many people to be the best reggae song in 2005 (beating out Damian Marley's, "Welcome To Jamrock").

Nominated for Best New Entertainer at the 2006 International Reggae and World Music Awards, the twenty-three year old singer has been dominating the Jamaician charts with hits including "Is There a Place", "Beautiful Lady", and the chart-topping ballad, "Mama, Don't Cry".

We are presently focusing on swimwear and accessories but behind the scenes we are creating hot designs that will soon be available on T- shirts, hoodies and jeans! Our Logo is the Humming Bird Or Doctor Bird which is the National Bird Of Jamaica.
